I love travelling

There is nothing like visiting a country to really fall in love with travelling. For some people travelling is just a matter of going to a hotel and sitting around the pool, which is great, but for me travelling around and visiting sights is so much more enlightening.
There are so many hidden wonders all around a country and it seems like England is packed with them. Many towns and cities have fascinating histories due to the amount of invasions and historic background they have. There are a vast variety of museums and palaces so everywhere you turn there is something to do and to see. It has definitely changed my views of going on holiday and it has woken up a yearning to travel.
I hope to get the opportunity to explore more of my own country and many others over the next few years as there is nothing better than learning.

Thin people are bullied too!

With raising amounts of obesity all around the world, it has turned into one of the biggest and most difficult problems to combat. Overweight people have always suffered from nasty comments and remarks, and have been targeted by bullies. But things have changed, overweight people are not the only ones to suffer. More and more thin people are also receiving nasty comments about their appearance.
There are clearly many problems with eating disorders and the constant need to look good. Models are incredibly thin and they often promote a mistaken image about beauty. Many men and women of all different ages try to lose weight to fit in with the perfect body image, which obviously should not be accepted, but what is you are thin because it is just your body type? I, for instance, come from a family of tall slim people and I am lucky enough to be able to eat in quantity and remain slim. That added to moderate exercise makes me naturally quite thin. Some would say that I'm lucky, but they are not concious of the amount of rude comments I receive, from chicken legs to anorexic.
I think people need to be more aware of the fact that everybody is different and there is no need to pick on anyone.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING!

Christmas is my favorite time of the year and there are only sixteen days left now. I think the best thing about Christmas is the count down to Christmas Day as it involves everything that I find magical about this time of the year: Buying presents for loved ones is so special because you get to give back and thank people for all of the great things they have done for you through out the year. The food at Christmas is delicious, but it is not just the main meal on Christmas Day that I love. It is all the snacks and sweets that we start to make and eat during the buildup to Christmas, like mince pies, Rose´s chocolates, sausage rolls, christmas cake and sweets. I also love the lights and decorations that are put up in December in cities and towns as somehow they make everything feel more magical. Shops are full of beautiful decorations and presents and shopping centres build Santa´s grottos and offer fun activities for people of all ages, like ice-skating. Going out shopping for christmas presents is so much more fun when you are surrounded by pretty lights and cheery music. Furthermore, putting up the christmas tree and decorations surrounded by family members makes it such an exciting time. I cannot wait for Christmas to arrive yet at the same time, I do not want it to come to an end.

Something I like that others do not (Compulsory)

I have heard over the years so many people curse the cold weather, complaining about how cold it is, how much they miss the summer time and how they would love the weather to improve. I do not share the same opinion. Both times of the year have different advantages and disadvantages but I must admit that I love the cold wintry months of December, January and February.

I absolutely love the cold because it is a sign that my favorite time of the year is on it´s way: Christmas. It is the time of the year when families and friends get together and enjoy quality time with each other without work and stress getting in the way.  Furthermore, it is the best time of the year to stay at home with a blanket and hot chocolate and watch movies or read a book. Also, winter clothing is so comfortable and snugly as it includes fluffy pyjamas, jumpers and furry hats and scarves, A further advantage to the cold weather is that sometimes it snows. There is nothing better than playing in the snow with friends and loved ones, or waking up on Christmas Day to find it´s snowing outside.

Winter is a time for family and although it is cold, it is the time of year that makes me feel the happiest and warmest inside. So contrary to many, it is my favorite time of the year.

Describe a person (Compulsory)

It may sound very typical, but my mum is the best mum in the world. Physically she is very similiar to me, or at least that is what people say. She is tall, slim and has blond hair and grey hazel eyes. As a person, she is very strong and sensitive at the same time, which is something that she has been able to teach me.  She is also a very fun and happy person. She has always been able to make me laugh and feel better. One of the best things about my mum is how understanding she is. She is able to put herself is other people´s shoes and this makes her very a very empathetic person. This has meant that whenever I need to talk to someone, I always turn to her and she is able to spend hours talking with me until we find a solution to any problems I may have. She is a very loving person and makes loved ones feel very special.

Forever young

Childhood is the most important period of a childs´ life in which they are free to watch Disney movies, play with cuddly toys and happily play without a worry in the world.  But when we get to a certain age we are expected to forget about all of those fabulously fun things and  just "grow up". But many of us do not want to grow up so quickly.
It is odd that when we are little we want to grow up so quickly, always trying to make ourselves older than we actually are and of course when asked how old we are we are seven and three quarters. Many young children look up to older kids and want to be as old as they are. But in time, all of that changes.
When we get to a certain age we are expected to grow up and start acting like adults. With this comes more responsibilities, worries and independence. We cannot expect to be forever young children, but at the same time, it is important not to forget our childhood years. One can be an adult and still love Disney and cuddly toys. Some may call it childish and stupid, but if that is what makes someone happy, then why not watch the odd Disney movie now and again?
As long as we are able to grow up sensibly and assume our different responsibilities, there is nothing wrong with being a little childish from time to time, as it makes people feel nostalgic and remember good times.

Smartphones- Are they taking over the world? (Compulsory)

These days everybody has a smartphone and a large percentage of those people are unfortunately addicted to them. There are a huge amount of advantages to having a smartphone, but it seems that the more popular these phones get, the more disadvantages appear. Owners of these devices must be conscious of the limits that lie between the technological world of phones and the real world.

One of the biggest advantages of smartphones is being able to connect to the internet nearly anywhere. It is difficult to get lost when your phone has online data and GPS to tell you exactly where you are. A further advantage is that with these types of phones  one can be constantly connected with friends and family all around the world. The possibilities are nearly endless as there are thousands of apps that offer everything from fitness, health, games, dictionaries, etc. The majority of these phones can also be used to  take  photos,  instantly uploading them to the internet, but here lies one of the biggest problems that has arisen in the last few years.

One of the biggest problems with the internet, phones and social networks is the lack of privacy. People are able to hack into phone and computer devices, not only stealing photos and information, but invading people´s privacy. Another very common problem is the amount of users that are addicted to their phones, These people tend to be addicted to social network sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. This addiction often leads of communication problems with the real world. A table surrounded by youths that are paying more attention to their phones instead of chatting with their friends is a very common sight nowadays. Moreover, it is said that the constant use of these devices has a serious negative effect on a person´s health, producing cancer in the worst cases.

Despite the negative aspects of owning a smartphone, they can be extremely useful in many situations as long as people are able to control the amount of usage.

City life

This is my first year at university and, although I have moved house several times throughout my lifetime, I have never lived in a city. I have met so many people that don´t seem to like the experience of moving into a big city and living here during most of the year, but I love it! City life is very different from anything I have ever experienced.
Maybe it is because for the majority of my life I have lived a 10 minute drive away from town. It doesn´t seem much when it is put like that, but imagine I had to ask my parents to take me everywhere, and when they couldn´t, it meant staying at home. There were definitely positive aspects of growing up surrounded by countryside, but know that I am older, the city has a lot more to offer. Everything is simply closer here. There are restaurants, cafes, and many types of shops on our doorstep, which makes life a lot easier. In addition, there are so many more things to do as we are surrounded by historic buildings, museums, gyms, theatres, plays, parks, etc., and there are many places to explore. Another novelty for me is living in a flat. I have always lived in houses surrounded by land and nature, and have never had to deal with noisy neighbors, however, this year I am surrounded by noise. We have an unfortunately rather noisy family living next door that spend most of their time shouting and fighting between themselves, playing slightly annoying instruments and slamming doors, and unlike my flatmates, I find it quite amusing.
I feel that there is a faster place of life here in the city and it is not as easy to get bored. Everything has it´s given moment and it is nicer to spend the summer time in the country side or at the beach, but at least for now, I like it here.

Tabacco

In 2015, there are over one billion smokers in the world, which means that over 20% of the population smokes. It causes millions of deaths and illnesses every year and affects people that do not even smoke, via second-hand smoke. There is no reason to smoke, and although smokers may find it helps them temporally, but they do not realise what it is doing to there bodies.

Tobacco is one of the worlds biggest threats as it kills around six million people every year. Unfortunately, 10% of those six million are not actual smokers. They are second-hand smokers, and in many cases, have no chose but to breathe in all of the toxic fumes from their friend´s and family´s cigarettes. Many children´s deaths have been caused by breathing in the smoke produced by their family members and has an extremely negative consequences on pregnant women.
80% of smokers live in low and middle-income countries. Many have economic problems, yet they carry on spending their money on cigarettes instead of using it in a more sensible manner. Not everyone is conscious of the affects that tobacco has on their bodies. It produces all different kinds of cancer, strokes, heart diseases, etc. Many countries are not aware of the negative affects it has on our bodies due to the lack of necessary information and anti-tobacco advertisements and warnings.
Studies have shown that by showing people the damage that it can create has significantly increased awareness and has encouraged people to quit. For example, if parents knew the kind of effects that their smoking habits had on their children, many would think twice about their the effect their addiction was having on those around them.

There should be more awareness and information about smoking available to both developed and poorer countries to prevent so many deaths for both smokers and non-smokers. If smokers were given the correct amount of help and support, we would be able to live in a more smoke-free world.

Introduction and conclusion (Compulsory)

Introduction:
Many youths go through many phase throughout their teenage years. One minute they are wearing an all-black rather vampirey outfit, and in a blink of a eye, they are skater fans with the lastest band Tee. This obviously does not apply to everyone, but when it does happen, there is no reason to feel bad about it.

Conclusion:
People get picked on for being different and for wearing different types of clothes that might not be considered "fashionable". But does it really matter what we are wearing? If people took more time to get to know the person instead of criticizing what they are wearing, I am sure we would all get on a lot better.

It´s good to go through phases!

I was one of those teenagers that got to about thirteen and started experimenting with what I wore. Now that I look back, it was a strange that in a very short space of time, I went from wearing girly sweet clothes to rather boy-like dark clothing. Then I started wearing dark clothes and soon. After a few years, the phase passed and I began to wear the clothes that I truly felt comfortable in. I have now discovered a kind of love for fashion and clothes, but was important to have gone through different phases to finally discover myself. I think the same thing happens too many people and it is not a bad thing at all.

An inspiring speech

The other day I watched Malala Yousafzai´s father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, speech at TED. I had heard about Malala in the past, but apart from the basics, I didn´t really know that much about her. After watching the video, I was intrigued to find out more.
Her father´s speech was truly touching and toughed at my heart strings. I was astonished by his passion for his beliefs and those of his daughter, and how proud he was of his daughter. He was so confident in what he believed that he was able to transmit that to everyone that has listening.
I especially liked his final statement: "Don´t ask me what I did. Ask me what I did not do. I did not clip her wings, and that´s all." I love how he wants to change the way that education works in certain countries in the world, and make it available for both boys and girls

Injustice

Since a very young age we are asked the very typical question: what do you want to be when you grow up? Few children at such a young age actually become what they wanted to be as a child, as their opinions change as they grow. I was the typical little girl that wanted to be a princess and as that phase faded, I wanted to be a vet. Unfortunately I then discovered my phobia of blood and that put an end to that dream job.
I grew up learning two languages which fueled my great love of learning languages and I decided a few years ago that I wanted to be a translator. But it was not as easy as that. I studied hard during six form and got good marks in the university´s access exams, but that was not enough. I was just three decimals away from accessing the degree this year and only those who have experienced this firsthand can imagine how frustrating it is. Translation has one of the lowest amount of places in Murcia University, and I do not agree. It is understandable that more students cost more money because the university has to employ more teachers, but I find it unfair that other degrees like Admin have over five hundred places. Is it not possible to take some of these places away and divide them between other degrees that have less places? It would make a more equal system whereby everyone that worked hard at school would get the chance to study what they really  wanted. This would also stop people from studying degrees just for the sake of it, occupying a place that someone else might want. I am in this situation as I am waiting for a place in translation, where someone might not actually want to be, and as I am waiting, I am occupying a place in English studies. I am certain that is somebody that wanted to study the degree that I am on and I am stupidly taking a place away from them. It ends up being a vicious circle, where very few people actually get the chance to study and work towards their dream job.

Crying Wolf

The other day, at about one in the morning, we heard somebody scream outside our flat. At first we thought nothing of it, as there are always quite a few kids on our street at all hours of the day and night. But then there was a second scream, awfully loud this time and rather panicked. This time we definitely thought something was wrong and went out on the terrace to find out what was going on. When you hear that sort of thing so many things go through your mind:  Is the person involved alright?; has someone been hurt?; maybe someone has been mugged... We could not see anyone, but the girl carried on calling for help and screaming. When we were about to phone for help, the girl in question appeared round the corner with a friend laughing and joking. It had all been a prank and a terrible one at that.
I can´t understand why people would want to make others think they are in trouble just for a laugh. Too many of these types of situations occur these days, and it will get to a point were no one is going to pay attention to cries for help anymore. What happens if someone really does need help, but no one takes any notice because they have been pranked in the past and think it is just a silly joke.
Some teenagers have definitely not heard the story about the boy that cried wolf and need to learn a little more about making harmful jokes.

Public speaking (Compulsory)

I have always been quite a timid person, I used to be the typical little girl that wouldn´t let go of her mother´s hand. This has caused a few problems through out my school life and when having to speak in public, as standing up in front of a class full of people was always my worst nightmare. I´m not the only one with this problem, there are a lot of people in my situation and it is something that should be overcome during university.
There must be an easy solution for stage fright and nervousness. If we started speaking in public thoughout primary and secondary school we would be so used to talking in front of people by the time we got to university that it wouldn´t affect us at all. Obviously, little children are not going to do the same type of presentations as older students, but they will start getting used to it. If public speaking is made into a fun game kids will want to participate and will feel comfortable in no time. This way, instead of dreading it, it is associated with a fun and light hearted activity.

Christmas in different countries (Compulsory)

Having lived in both England and Spain, I have spent Christmas in both countries and there are a lot of differences. One of the biggest differences is that in England the most important day of Christmas is Christmas Day celebrated on the 25th of December, while in Spain, it is Three kings day, celebrated on the 6th of January. Different from Spain, Christmas is a huge thing in England. People start preparing for it months in advance and the cities are filled with beautiful lights and decorations I haven´t experienced the same amount of enthusiasm towards this holiday in Spain.
The food is very different as well, as in England, typical Christmas food includes Christmas dinner, minced pies, prawn cocktail, Christmas pudding, trifle, etc., whereas in Spain Christmas dinner usually includes seafood, turrón, roscón, polvorones, and the traditional twelve grapes on New year´s Eve. I must say that I prefer Christmas in England because it feels like home, but it´s great in Spain too.

The limits of my language are the limits of my world

The quote "You live a new life for every language you speak. If you know only one language, you live only once." really inspires me. I completely agree with what it says, as the opportunity to learn a new language opens so many doors in life. When you learn a new language, you are not just learning a  language, you are entering into a new world of culture, food, history ...
It´s not something that can be done quickly and that easily, it takes years of dedication and hard work to perfect all the different skills that are involved in being able to speak a language. I think one of the things that people find most difficult is being able to have a conversation, being able to use everything they have learnt about the grammar and rules and put it into action. It is harder than you initially think to communicate with a native person of the language that you are learning, as it´s one thing to study rules from a book, but it´s completely different when you are in foreign country and communication is essential.
From a personal point of view, I have lived in Spain for 12 years and it hasn´t always been that easy. Some say that the younger you are, the easier it is to learn a language, which is true. But that isn´t always biggest the problem. It´s easy to feel intimidated when surrounded by teachers and children that you don´t understand. I can still remember like it was yesterday, the first day I went to school in my new town here in Spain. I don´t think I´ve ever been so confused in my whole life, to put it lightly. I was surrounded by children that were talking and screaming in a completely different language and I didn´t understand what the teacher was saying either. In time I learnt to speak spanish and it all a little easier. Unfortunately, the feeling of inferiority was always present, as I never seemed to be able to reach the same goals as everyone else, and I didn´t really fit in. It has only in the last 4 years that I have felt that I belong here and I think that is something that a lot of people don´t realise when moving to a new country. I would never regret coming to Spain though, as it opened so many doors for me. I don´t know if I would have had such an interest in languages if I had stayed in England.
In my case, the more languages I learn, the more I want to learn and it´s one of my favorite things to do.

YouTube

About six months or so ago I discovered YouTube. I had obviously used YouTube before, I think anyone with Internet access has. What I mean is that I discovered the huge youTube community and hundreds of people that put so much work into making videos. I have always loved clothes and makeup, so I started  watching makeup tutorials and season lookbooks. I discovered Zoella´s channel and fell in love with watching her videos. There is a little bit of everything on her channel: Q&As, makeup tutorials, lookbooks, hauls, cookery, etc. I  Her happy ways and enthusiasm made my day a little better when I was going through a tough time a while ago. Through her channel I discovered other great youtubers and I was hooked. There is such a big community of youtubers now, and so many of them do such great things, like spreading the word about charities and helping the community. Others have brought out books and merchandise. They manage to connect with their audiences as they share a lot with them, like their experiences, trips, recommendations and life tips.
I used to have English TV, but I haven´t anymore so I suppose YouTube is a kind of substitute.

Drugs destroy lives! (Compulsory)

So many lives have been ruined by drugs, so I completely disagree with drug use and with the people that sell them. In most cases, once someone has fallen under their spell, they find it very difficult to stop consuming  because they are extremely addictive. Since they are so easy to get hold of, some people seem to start taking them at a very early age. I can´t explain how sad it is to see such young teenagers hooked on drugs when they could be doing far better things with their lives. What must a parent feel when they have tried to bring up their child correctly, but cannot stop them from deciding to take drugs. I think one of the big problems nowadays is that there are so many different types of drugs, and therefore, they are available for all types of consumers. The people that make and put these illegal substances on the market must realise that they are encouraging drug intake and making money out of some else´s addiction. Drug addiction sometimes leads to other crimes like robbery to pay for that addiction. Therefore, a permanent solution has to be found to stop all of this from happening.

Giant´s causeway (Compulsory)

If you are looking for an interesting and historical place to visit, I would definitely recommend   Giant´s Causeway. It is situated on the coast of Northern Ireland in County Antrim and is the result of a volcanic eruption that formed these strange looking hexagonal columns 60 million years ago. It is a beautiful place, with it´s own kind of charm and for that reason and many more it was named as the fourth greatest natural wonder in the UK. The columns are made out of besalt, some are tall and thin, yet others, especially the columns that are situated around the bottom, are smaller and look more like blocks.
There are different legends surrounding Giant´s Causeway. According to one legend, the rocks are the remainder of a fight between two huge giants that started throwing rocks at each other. While another legend involves a love story between two giants that built it as a bridge between Ireland and Scotland.
If you ever get the chance to visit this magical and mystical natural wonder, make the most of it and go!

"To LIVE would be an awfully big adventure"

I have always loved travelling, as a child I loved going on holiday to new and exciting places with my parents. The thrill of packing suitcases, getting up early and getting to the airport was always part of the fun of going away. As I have got older I have realised how much I want to travel the world.

My dream would be to travel to all of those places that I have only been able to admire via the TV or in magazines, like Thailand, India, Australia, China, Lapland and so many more.  Think how amazing it would be to grab a rucksack and travel from country to country, without a worry in the world.  I think you really get to know yourself better when you distance yourself slightly from the world of technology and start to enjoy the natural beauties that surround us. It´s usually a lot easier to think and reflect when surrounded by nature so imagine how free you would feel sitting in the gardens of an Indian temple.

Another great thing about travelling is the opportunity it gives people to learn about new cultures, people, food, and how others lead their lives in other countries. It gives you a new perspective about life, as I think after visiting countries where people manage to live with a lot less than us and still manage to be happy, shows us that we should appreciate more the luxuries and relatively easy lives we live.

Travelling gives you a sense of freedom, it gives you the chance to discover who you really are and what you want out of life.

"Horns"

I have to admit that throughout my childhood I was a big Harry Potter fan, and I guess I still am a big fan. I could still sit in front of the TV and happily watch all of the films. As a child I was always waiting for the next movie to be released, but everything good comes to an end and after the eighth movie everyone had to accept that they weren´t going to make any more.
Nowadays the actors, especially Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson are the star characters in new films. I watched a film called "Horns" the other day with my friends and it was very odd seeing Daniel Radcliffe plays a completely different role. I am too used to Daniel playing the role of the heroic and innocent Harry Potter, and it was a little shocking to see him transform into a devil in "Horns". I have to say, although the film is rather strange, I would definitely recommend it. It is a mix of love, passion, tragedy, murder, supernatural and religion, so you won´t get bored while watching it. The movie isn´t too long, but I would recommend fast internet, as it took us more than three hours to watch it, but that´s another story.

Living in Spain or abroad? (Compulsory)

It´s a difficult question to answer as you can never have the best of both worlds and I only wish I could. I have lived in Spain since I was seven years old and some say that I´m more Spanish than English but due to the majority of my family living in England, I still feel very connected to the country. There are different things that I prefer from each country, for instance I love spending Christmas in England as I am surrounded by my friends and family and for some reason the cold snowy weather and the delicious food makes it feel even more like Christmas. Having said that, I prefer spending the summer in Spain as there are a lot more things to do due to the climate, like going to the beach, going on holiday... I love both countries and cultures, but at least for now I pick Spain.
